June14,2021

Golf is more than just a fun way to pass the time for most people who play. It’s a sport that you can do for much longer than any other if you are doing all of the right things. Now that the weather is warming up, more and more people are gearing up to play again, here are some tips that will help to keep you on the course for many years to come!

  1. Dynamic Stretching

There are two main types of stretching, static and dynamic. Static stretching is when you hold one stretched position for an extended period of time. This is great for extending your range of motion. However, when warming up for golf, it’s important to include dynamic stretching as well. This us when you are moving your muscles and joints through their range of motion as a way to loosen or “warm-up” your muscles and joints to be ready for that first swing!

  1. Strength Training

Gentle strength training exercises will help reduce impact stress when you swing your club which lessens your chance of injury. Lifting weights is not as big and scary as it seems and is actually very helpful in many areas of our physical health.

  1. Cross-training

Don’t be afraid to add some variety to your physical activities! Practicing your swing is great but without any variance in your training, you will put some wear and tear on specific areas of your body. It’s important to switch up your movements while still helping that swing!

  1. Checking Your Equipment

It’s important to make sure your clubs are the right size for your specific measurements. If you are using equipment that’s too small or too big this can be bad for not just your body, but for your game as well!

  1. Stay Moving During the Day

If you spend your whole week sitting down then expect your body to be ready to play 18 holes of golf… you will be in for a sore reality! In order to play pain-free, it’s vital to make sure you move during the day. Even if you just go for a 10 minute walk or do 10 minutes of stretching, anything to keep your body nimble and moving.

  1. Consulting with a Physical Therapist

A physical therapist can help to identify certain painful areas that you may be dealing with and help you to balance your body through manual techniques so that you are moving around in optimal alignment. They can also work on specific motions with you and help to strengthen your body as well as heal it. Not to mention, the biggest benefit is to utilize their knowledge of the human body to make sure you are not only playing golf well, but playing for as long as you’d like!
