5 Reasons to Strive for an Active Pregnancy
Pregnant? Wondering whether it’s a good idea to exercise? If this is you, and you are wondering why it is important to keep active throughout pregnancy, this blog will discuss the top reasons to do so!
Generally, 30 minutes of moderate-intensity exercise is recommended on most days of the week for women when they are pregnant. We highly recommend all pregnant women keep active via exercise that they’ve previously been doing, and that they enjoy! We will discuss the ins and outs of HOW to structure exercise in a different post, and in this blog, we’ll be focusing on the top reasons WHY it’s so important. Hopefully, this will light that fire and get you going if you need some inspiration!
Please remember it is essential to speak to your OBGYN/Midwife before initiating a new exercise program. Additionally, it is not WRONG to rest! It’s important to listen to what you’re body needs and respect how you’re feeling, especially during the tougher days during the first trimester and towards the end of your pregnancy. But on your good days, here are some great reasons to get moving!
5 Reasons to Stay Active During Pregnancy:
- Exercise Improves Maternal Mental Health. Exercise releases endorphins, improves mood, and increases energy! This is vital during a time when exhaustion is common, hormones are changing, and mood can be fluctuating.
- Exercise Improves Maternal Physical Health. Regular exercise can help prevent excess weight gain, may shorten labor and reduce the need for a c-section, and prevent gestational diabetes! All while improving or maintaining cardiovascular fitness and muscular strength and endurance.
- Baby’s Health and Development. Movement promotes more blood flow to the uterus and the baby, allowing the optimal exchange of nutrients. Research studies have shown that exercise increases your chances of full-term delivery. They have also found that regular exercise during pregnancy decreases the risk of chronic disease for both mother and child after birth.
- Exercise can Improve Digestion. Constipation is a common and uncomfortable ailment during pregnancy. Regular movement and exercise is a great way to keep things regular. Combine with at least 2.5 liters of water and lots of fiber!
- Maintain Core and Pelvic Floor Strength. Our core and pelvic floor are essential areas to keep strong, flexible, and functioning optimally throughout pregnancy. Targeted exercises and the correct modifications to your programming can make all the difference. More on this later!
