How to Prevent Caregiver Burnout

How to Prevent Caregiver Burnout

Caring for a loved one in need can be one of the most rewarding and honorable things a person can do. It can also be one of the most challenging and demanding responsibilities an individual will ever face. Whether you are caring for a sick loved one, children, or friends, the toll that is taken cannot be understated. You are given the responsibility of not only caring for that individual (or individuals) physically, but sometimes emotionally as well. This time of year especially, it's easy to get lost in giving, but we cannot give from empty cups! Self-care should be a top priority and that includes both your physical and mental health.  It's easy to get lost in giving, but no one benefits when you are burnt out.

Impacts of Burnout:

  • Anxiety, depression, irritability
  • Physical & Mental Exhaustion
  • Difficulty sleeping
  • Overreacting to minor nuisances
  • New or worsening health problems
  • Constant fatigue even when sleeping well
  • Change in hygeine habits
  •  Trouble concentrating
  • Feelings of resentment
  • Turning to mind-altering substances such as alcohol.
  • Change in eating habits
  • Neglecting responsibilities
  • Cutting back on leisure activities

With all of that being said, it is important to know these steps that you or someone you know can take to prevent and lessen burnout:

  • Ask for help! Needing help doesn’t make you a bad caregiver. It makes you a resourceful and responsible one!
  • Take breaks. Get out of the house, visit with friends, get some fresh air, or even take a long bath at the end of the day.
  • Take care of yourself. Don’t skip your own appointments because you’re too busy. Exercise, eat well, and get enough sleep.
  • Get up earlier to give yourself a little extra time in the mornings. Use it to exercise, meditate, read, journal, or whatever will get your day off to a good start.
  • Don't be afraid to spend money, time, or energy on yourself. Sometimes all we need is an hour of manual therapy to keep ourselves from being burnt out! Your mental health is worth it!

These tips are just a few ways that holiday burnout can be prevented, but everyone is different. If you are a caregiver that is feeling stressed and overwhelmed by your responsibilities, the most important thing to remember is to not be afraid to speak up and ask for help when you need it. Those around you are here to listen and help you, and you shouldn’t feel like you have to carry the responsibility all on your own. During this time of year when everyone is focused on the stress that comes with the holidays, make sure you make time for yourself to enjoy this time of year. Although it comes with its own set of stressors and obligations, make sure to put yourself first- you won’t regret it. After all, you cannot successfully take care of someone else if you do not take care of yourself first.
