The Fascial Voice: The Healing Crisis

Hello patients of Arancia Physical Therapy! In this week's blog, we'll be talking about the very important topic of the healing crisis. This is something very important for everyone new to Myofascial release to know more about and a great refresher for people who have experienced it.

What You Can Feel After the Treatment

Myofascial Release is a safe and very effective hands-on technique that involves applying gentle sustained pressure into the myofascial connective tissue restrictions to eliminate pain and restore motion. MFR is different from other types of bodywork that you may have experienced. It addresses restrictions and habitual patterns deep within the fascial system of the body, the treatment does not end once you get up off the treatment table.

Your fascial system may continue to unravel and release for hours or even days after you leave. This is normal! Continue to tune into your body. You may feel exhilarated, moody and emotional, or anywhere in between. I encourage you to listen to your body and flow with whatever is coming up. Be gentle with yourself. Most people feel better immediately, although some may feel sore or temporarily stirred up. This is called the healing crisis. In other words, you may get worse before you get better.

The Healing Crisis

As you move through your treatments, you may experience what we call a “healing crisis.” This can be anything from feeling like mild to intense workout pain, the feeling of emotional chaos, or feeling like you have been hit by a Mack Truck. While this may be uncomfortable, it is a part of the healing process. Your body has been holding on to a pattern of restriction for a while and when it finally gets released you will feel it in the form of a healing crisis. It is much like when a limb falls asleep, you don’t notice it until it wakes up- that is, where you will get that tingling and “pins and needles” feeling.

When you have been out of touch with a part of your body due to fascial restriction, what you experience in a healing crisis is really more of a waking up process. Allowing yourself to feel this is important to the process. It can also be part of the fascial voice experience. The fascial voice is your body‘s way of expressing something that may need to be addressed next. Remember this is an unfolding process; being gentle with yourself as you move through it is helpful.

As much as we would like, we cannot heal you. As stated earlier, your body heals. Since that is true, you don’t need anyone to heal you. You and your therapist will work toward the same goal. Communicating with your therapist what you are experiencing will help your therapist help you better. On occasion, your therapist will ask you what you are feeling or what you are noticing. These are not trick questions. There is no wrong answer; everything is valid. Even if you are feeling “nothing,” nothing is something!

Arancia Physical Therapy News! I was asked to help instruct the Pediatric JFB Myofascial Release Seminar in Springfield, MA this past weekend. I had a great time teaching this introductory course to PT’s and PTA’s from all over New England. MFR is a highly effective form of manual therapy that can be very helpful in treating babies and children for various health conditions. Children “unwind” so naturally, and gracefully without thinking twice about how they look, or what others will think of them. They are a great source of inspiration and pure love.
